DesmosLock

Locks student laptops to Desmos during math tests, so schools can run calculator sections honestly.

Role
Co-founder (with Daniel Holguin)
When
2025 – now Since age 16
Status
Version 2 is in private testing. I handed the app back to Daniel in September 2026.

What I did

  • Found why Macs called the app "damaged". It wasn't signed or notarized. The files themselves were fine.
  • Designed a signed, notarized release pipeline that refuses to ship a build Apple would block.
  • Rolled back a release when an out-of-order merge broke the downloads.
  • Led the move to version 2, with staff accounts, school settings, and recovery when a student's laptop restarts mid-test.
  • Sealed the Desmos page off from the rest of the app after an audit found it could reach privileged code.

Results

  • 33 downloads of version 1.0 across Mac, Windows and Linux
  • 31 of the app's 34 merged pull requests directed by me

What was hard

The order of merges. Two fixes went in before the signing setup existed, so every download link pointed at a place that didn't exist yet, and the site promised signed builds it didn't have.

Apple also requires an adult to hold the developer account, so I couldn't own the signing identity myself. When I handed the app back it was still signed ad hoc.
